You do not know which type of distribution your program is? Here you find a short description of each: Adware: Software which is financed by showing advertisements. Betaversion: A beta version of a program means, that the program has not yet been finished completely, however it can be tested already in this present version. Such versions often contains many bugs (= program mistakes). Cardware: Here, the author demands as single performance that the user, which uses his program regularly, sends him an e-mail. Actually, it was called "Postcardware". But in present-days e-mail-time it is probably no longer necessary to send an extra postcard! ;-) Commercial: A Software which is free for private use. Only for commercial use you have to pay for. Crippleware: Usually very limited version of the full version for testing. Demo: A demo version is a restricted version of a software, which can be tested at will long. Donationware: This is probably the rarest distribution type. I have picked it only to round up the topic: with this distribution type, the user is asked to bestow a donation upon a charitable institution if he uses the program regularly. Freeware: If a program is freeware, it is allowed to be copied and spread at will, as long as nothing is changed. It therefore is, in contrast to public-domain, not without copyright! Ideaware: This is a quite rare distribution type: here the user gets an user license as soon as he has sent the author an idea for a new program function. Public-Domain: A program, that is marked as public-domain, is free from all rights. Therefore it is allowed to be spread at will and also to be changed it. Example scripts are often (e. g. Perl, PHP or ASP) marked as public-domain. Shareware: A shareware program can be tested for a certain period of time (determined by the author). It either must be registered after it or had to be deleted from the computer again. Often, at shareware programs hints come again and again that it is a test version. Trialware: Usually only slightly limited version of the full version for testing. |
